leo brien Leo Brien, was a family man, a successful Maritime Operations executive for the Port of Oakland, and a community servant who lost his battle with cancer in June of 1997. In one of the most selfless acts, Brien donated his own bone marrow to a young mother of three who he had never met. Since his death, a non-profit organization in his name continues his spirit of children’s charity work, including financial support for Camp Okizu, a retreat for children with cancer; the George Mark Children's Home construction project, a hospice for children with cancer; and to Dr. Fred Walmen, for his continued clear cell carcinoma research. The Leo Brien Foundation is a member of the National Heritage Foundation, and is a public charity exempt from federal taxation under Sections 501(c)(3) and 509 (a)(1) of the Internal Revenue Code. As such, contributions to the Foundation receive maximum deductibility permitted under federal law. (Tax I.D.#58-2085326).

Your Generous Donation

The Okizu Foundation depends upon the generosity of individuals, foundations, corporations, and special events like this one to operate our programs and continue the development of our permanent site.

Our camping programs draw children and families from all over northern California. Patients are referred through a unique collaboration of local medical centers that include The Lucile Salter Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford, University of California at both the San Francisco and Davis, Kaiser Permanente Medical Centers, Oakland Children’s Hospital, Sutter Memorial, David Grant Hospital, California Pacific Medical Center and John Nuir Medical Center.

Due to the financial stress on families caring for a child with cancer, our camping programs are provided free of charge.

If you would like to join us in this endeavor, please contact the Okizu Foundation for information regarding donor opportunities.
